The sandstone tomb slab of Niall Mor McSwyne, grandson of the first Chief at Bannagh (south west Donegal) can be seen at St. Mary;s church, Killybegs, and is said to have been removed from Ballysaggart Friary and taken there.
The remains of his castle can be seen at St. John's Point too but much of the stone from it was taken to Killybegs in the 19th century to build St. Mary's church. |
NOTE
You are on private property when visiting Ballysaggart Friary to be aware that thoughful parking is used. If the owner appears, politely ask permission. Other than that, do not park at their door obviously nor block the area with your vehicle. The pier there gets covered in water so can be VERY slippy. Don't go on it. The Friary itself is very delicately balanced with what is left of it so take care and do not touch it. |
