St. Mary's of the Visitation (R.C.), Killybegs ~ Built 1843
Killybegs and St. Mary's Church
Domineering the sky line of the fishing port of Killybegs is St. Mary's of the Visitation church. From the information sign outside the church:
"Started 2nd February 1842. Opened Christmas Day 1843. The dedication of the church to St. Mary by Dr. Cullen, Archbishop of Dublin, was delayed to 1854 due to the Great Famine".
Outside the church in a glass cabinet is the slab stone of Niall Mor McSwyne taken from the ruins of the Franciscan Friary at nearby St. John's Point in 1868.
The church is currently (2011) undergoing extensive renovations and the photographs here will be updated once the renovations are complete.
