CRUIT ISLAND, County Donegal ~ Population approx. 85
An Chruit ~ Which is the Irish for harp (possibly referring to the shape of the island)  It also means ‘the hump or little hillock’

Cruit Island
Cruit (pronounced "Critch") Island, off the coast of West Donegal near Kincasslagh, is a small island measuring roughly 3 miles by one mile. It is approached by a bridge so access to it is easy. Beside the road bridge there is a smaller pedestrian bridge. There are no shops nor pubs on Cruit but the drive back to Kincassalgh is very short and there you will find a shop and pubs. On the island there is the Cruit Golf Club which has it's own bar.

The island is very beautiful and is dotted with sandy beaches all around it's coastline. In fact there are about twelve beaches on this tiny island. There is a small pier and a couple of slipways. During low tide it is possible to walk to the mainland at Bellcruit. You can book a boat to take you to nearby Owey Island from Cruit if you so wish.

Between Cruit and Bellcruit there is another small island, Coffin Island. The most notable thing about this small land mass is the monument which sits atop it. The monument is to the memory of Edmund Brian Boyle.
