The information stone beside the bridge reads:
"Fad leis seo a thagadh cairde agus lucht gaoil an té a bhí ag imeacht chun na coigrithe. B’anseo an scaradh. Seo Droichead na nDeor”. The roughly translates to: "Family and friends of the person leaving for foreigh lands would come this far. Here was the separation. This is the Bridge of Tears." 'WAYFARING STRANGERS: The Musical Voyage From Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia'Three of our photographs of the Bridge of Tears here have been used in a magnificent publication 'Wayfaring Strangers' by Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr (the University Of North Carolina Press).
The Foreword is written by Dolly Parton and reads: "Fiona Ritchie has spent over thirty years telling the stories of Celtic music on her show broadcast over National Public Radio, 'The Thistle and the Shamrock'. The book is now available in paperback too and you can purchase the hardback or paperback HERE. |
CLANNAD 'The Bridge of Tears'The Donegal musicians, Clannad, sing movingly and beautifully about The Bridge of Tears:
"The mist has cleared from Muckish Hill Our parting coming nearer The last embrace, the final touch With nothing more to say Nothing more to say As silence fell around the bridge Not a single word was spoken A bitter breeze, a lonely stream Echoed through the Glen Echoed through the Glen Droichead na ndeor Agus droichead na gcaointe Droichead na gcaointe Agus droichead na ndeor Memories fade with passing age In forlorn hope we wait for Distant hills still haunt us now Until the end of time Until the end of time Droichead na ndeor Agus droichead na gcaointe Droichead na gcaointe Agus droichead na ndeor Droichead na ndeor Agus droichead na gcaointe Droichead na gcaointe Agus droichead na ndeor" ~~~ (The Irish translates to: The bridge of tears And the bridge of sorrows The bridge of sorrows And the bridge of tears Alas ~~~ You can listen to Clannad signing The Bridge of Tears HERE. |

The famine graveyard at Stranorlar lies just outside the town and is approached over private land so please ask locally for directions.
The plot is very well kept and surrounded by very well made stone walls. On one of the walls someone many years ago fashioned a cross from the stones and it can still be seen, with careful looking. STRANORLAR
