MONELLAN WOODS

These beautiful woods, not far from The Cross, near Killygordon and Stranorlar/Ballybofey, are a magical place to visit. The green there is so vibrant it looks almost enhanced.
There are various paths to walk around and so you can do a short loop of the woods or take a number of paths for a longer walk.
The woods were once the property of a family called Delap who had a large house, called locally Monellan Castle, there until it was demolished in the1930's. You can read more about Monellan Castle in this excellent article by Tom Gallen on his site Tom Gallen.
Dotted along the way are benches to sit and enjoy the beautiful woodland, some near a stream that runs through it.
Within the woods, signposted, lies a tiny graveyard which measuring round 7 or 8 feet square must be one of the smallest, if not the smallest, graveyard in Ireland. The small plot is surrounded by an old stone wall with a small, now rusty, gate ste into it. It is the last resting place of the son and daughter of the house, Susan Dorathea Delap, James Bogle Delap and their friend, Elizabeth Williams.
There are plenty of wild flower varieties growing all around and lush fern plants dotted beneath the trees of which there are quite a variety.
It is a beautiful and peaceful walk to enjoy either at a gentle stroll or a quicker step up the occasional incline.
