HISTORICAL DONEGAL

Picture
Doe Castle, near Creeslough
County Donegal is very rich in historical sites.  The dolmen at Kilclooney is said to be one of the finests of it's kind in Ireland, the Tau Cross on Tory Island is one of only two in Ireland and the only one still in situ the other one in County Clare is now moved to a museum, the Killaghtee Cross, St. John's point is a fine early example of a Celtic Cross, which pre-dates the High Crosses of Ireland and of course Donegal being the birthplace of St. Colmcille (St. Columba) offers many sites in the county associated with this saint including his birthplace at Gartan near Letterkenny.  The list is endless but we have started our list of suggested historical sites below.  We will of course be adding to this regularly as we take photographs of Donegals historical sites.
